Macular Degeneration (MD) is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, affecting central vision. MD is primarily age related and most frequently affects people over the age of 50. One in seven people over the age of 50 are affected by the disease and the incidence increases with age. It is sometimes referred to as Age Related Macular Degeneration or 'AMD'.

The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society.Corporate Overview:The Australian War Memorial is established as a corporation by the Australian War Memorial Act 1980. The functions of the Memorial and the powers of the Memorial, the Minister, the Council, the Chairman and the Director are outlined in the Act. The Minister for Veterans' Affairs has portfolio responsibility for the Memorial, which is a statutory authority within the portfolio. The Council is responsible for the conduct and control of the affairs of the Memorial and the policy of the Memorial with respect to any matters determined by the Council.The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society. The functions of the Memorial are detailed in section 5(1) of the Act.The Memorial consists of three sub-programs: National Collection, Public Programs and Corporate Services.

We are a registered charity, independent of both government and religion. We are national in reach, operating in all States and Territories. We work with and through schools. We work at scale. In 2010 we worked in 3,200 schools (1). Each of these schools self-selected to partner with us, purchase our services (2) and make available our program to 610,000 students in their care. Operating since 1979, in excess of 4 million students have participated in our program over the past 32 years.
